design, art + illustration located (just) outside of philadelphia.
"BZ" of bz designstuff is Barbara (Zuckerman) Chotiner.
Barb Chotiner is an artist, designer, mom, and coffee lover, who creates in a Narberth - a funky little ‘burb just outside Philadelphia. Making her way up and back down the east coast, she has lived & worked in New York City, Boston and Philly.
Barb creates colorful, whimsical & sophisticated designs for numerous clients, and is a fan of combining traditional techniques with modern approaches. What starts as a sketch, ends up living among numerous (organized) layers in the computer. She is inspired by large cities, small elements found in nature, and Scandinavian design. With her work, she believes in organized chaos and making people smile.
She has BFA in Communications Design from Syracuse University and an MFA in Book Arts + Printmaking from the University of the Arts. She has worked with numerous design firms & ad agencies and was an in-house designer at Jim Henson Productions.
In 2001, Barb founded “bz designstuff,” a freelance art & design studio. In 2009, she began to license her designs when she began to work with Tiny Prints, where she sold her holiday card and invitation designs under the name “Umbrella.” In 2014, Barbara began to license her artwork to companies (to place on products) and can now be found at places such as Oopsy Daisy, Studio-M, DENY Designs, West Elm Local, Sams Club, TJ Maxx and Wayfair.com. In 2017, she illustrated her 5th children’s picture book. Also in 2017, Barb began working at The Franklin Institute as a Senior Graphic Designer and in 2019 was promoted to Manager of the Graphic Design Department.
Barb is available for freelance design work + illustration commissions.
