be-YOU-tiful

I've been working with floral designs this month, as I will have some items for sale at the upcoming 2015 Philadelphia Flower Show (at the pucciManuli booth).

For this months Art Bootcamp, we were encouraged to paint on wood and play with creating art in a scene as well as in a circular shape. I did find some time to play around with painting on some small wood shapes. (You can see an in progress photo in my instagram feed. I've actually done a bit more on them since this photo). In the past I really enjoyed painting on tiny 1-3" shapes. (I even had a series in my application to graduate school many years ago!) So I hope to do some more of these when I have some time*.

I really enjoyed using my Acryla Gouache on the wood. I liked how it seeped in and while it looked flat it was also quite rich. I then started to use some regular acrylic paint (since the acryla gouache is a bit pricey) but was not at all happy with those results as I didn't like the plastic sheen on top of the wood.

In the end for my submission, I went back to some text & floral imagery I had also been working with over the past 2 weeks. I played around with the idea of putting some of my text + textural (ooh - mental note - i like that phrase) pieces in these circle motifs. And then I took it further and imagined them being produced onto wooden cutting boards. I would totally buy these if I saw them at West Elm or Crate and Barrel! :) Would you??

*I'm actually in the middle of a huge illustration assignment at the moment and can not wait to share that once it's completed.

breathe in - breathe out - rinse - repeat

Editorial illustration time! This illustration was created for this article about meditation for people who don't like to meditate. I for one do, (thanks to a bunch of awesome mamas at my daughters preschool) but I admit it is very hard to find the time. But once I find it, I find am happy and grateful for finding the time and sitting calmly for 15-20 minutes.

This piece was originally started in gouache and scanned in. I have been playing around with gouache and recently started a project where i complete a (25 minute) gouache painting a day in a (non precious) sketchbook. It was inspired by my amazingly talented friend Jennifer Orkin Lewis. She has been doing this since January and the results are amazing. I am posting my progress on instagram - which you can follow here. I am starting with the mini goal of 30 days and once that occurs I plan to extend it longer.

Namaste and happy monday!

Meditation - the hardest part is getting started...

MATS Bootcamp February: Cuckoo Cuckoo

If you have read my blog, you will find that last year I was a very enthusiastic student of Lilla Rogers' Making Art the Sells class. I made some amazing art works in two different 5 week sessions. Well, Lilla is back. And this time it's with an assignment "Bootcamp".

Bootcamp is six months of 5 different projects. Each month brings a new assignment. The February assignment/theme was cuckoo clocks. We were then to present our final artwork as a design for an iPhone case. You should see the AMAZING designs that people have created. (And on Feb. 25 you will be able to see - as there will be a live gallery with all the 400+ participants. Looks like mine is on page 5!)

This month in particular has been a very busy one (for me) with work assignments, deadlines, power outages, snow storms, school closings, babysitters quitting via text message, interviewing new babysitters, planning my daughters 3rd birthday party, and new clients (yay!). That being said, I did not get to spend a great deal of time on my "homework." I did however end up with a piece thats a bit different than my usual take on things and I really am pleasantly surprised with the finished piece. I wish I could work at 1 PM the way I work at 1 AM.

Its is not a typical cuckoo clock. At the time of the assignment I was reading and then inspired by this article in New York Magazine about the photographer Andrew Garn who photographed 5,000 pigeons. The photographs were breathtaking and beautiful. My pigeons are a bit more rustic. New York City is my first love and I decided to make a sketchy "cuckoo" themed homage to my old hometown...
